This is a central nervous sytem disorder caused by low blood sugar. It occurs mainly in toy breeds between six and twelve weeks of age, often is precipitated by stress.

The signs are those of listlessness and depression. They are followed by muscular weaness, tremors (especially in the facial muscles) and later conclusions,coma, and Death. The entire sequence is not always seen. The dog may simply appear to be depressed or he may be weak, wobley, and jerky and may go into a coma. Hypoglycemia can occur without warning when a puppy is placed in a new home, or while being shipped, might appear if a meal is skipped, chills, becomes exhausted from too much playing, or has a digestive upset. Upsets place an added strain on the energy reserves of the liver and bring on symptons (if the dog is susceptible). Puppies that get diareha are more likely to develop hypoglycemia, their diet deficientcy can not sustain the liver.

 

TREATMENT

 

Treatment is directed at restoring blood levels of glucose, beginning at once.

Prolonged or repeated attacks can cause permanent damage to the brain. If the puppy is awake give it Karo syrup or honey or Nutrical or sugar water by mouth. He will begin to improve in minutes, then should rest and be kept warm for 30 minutes. If he's unconcious he will have to be given Dextrose solution intravenously by a vet Immediately.

Death will occur if not treated at once. Don't assume that your puppy is eating (WATCH) and don't overtire them or allow them to get chilled. I always say treat them as if they were your new born baby.
